The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a national-level engineering entrance examination conducted in India. It serves as the primary entrance test for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate engineering (B.Tech/ B.E.) courses in prestigious engineering institutions across the country.

  • Eligibility Criteria:

    Age Limit: There is no specific age limit to appear for JEE Main. However, candidates must have passed their 10+2 or equivalent examination.

  • Academic Qualification

    Candidates must have completed their 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects.

  • Conducting Body

    The JEE Main examination is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Exam Pattern for JEE Main

  • Mode: JEE Main is conducted in computer-based (online) mode, except for the Drawing Test in B.Arch, which is conducted in pen-and-paper (offline) mode.
  • Duration: The examination duration is 3 hours.
  • Number of Questions: The question paper consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) for B.Tech/ B.E. and B.Arch, while B.Planning includes MCQs as well as numerical value-based questions.
  • Subjects and Marks Distribution: For B.Tech/ B.E., the exam consists of Physics (25% weightage), Chemistry (25% weightage), and Mathematics (50% weightage). For B.Arch, it includes Mathematics (Part-I), Aptitude Test (Part-II), and Drawing Test (Part-III). B.Planning consists of Mathematics (Part-I), Aptitude Test (Part-II), and Planning-based MCQs (Part-III).
  • Marking Scheme: Correct answers are awarded 4 marks, while incorrect answers result in a deduction of 1 mark. No negative marking is applicable for numerical value-based questions.

JEE Advanced

  • Conducting Body: JEE Advanced is conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on a rotational basis.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for JEE Advanced, candidates must qualify JEE Main and meet additional criteria set by the organizing IIT.
  • Exam Pattern: JEE Advanced consists of two compulsory papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. The papers may include multiple-choice questions, numerical answer-based questions, and matching-type questions. The pattern and marking scheme may vary each year.

Application Process

  • The application process for JEE Main and JEE Advanced is generally conducted online.
  • Candidates need to register on the official website, fill out the application form, upload necessary documents, and pay the application fee.
  • The application forms for JEE Main and JEE Advanced are released separately, and candidates need to fulfill the eligibility criteria for each examination.

Result and Counseling:

  • JEE Main result is usually declared by NTA, and JEE Advanced result is declared by the respective IITs.
  • Based on the JEE Main result, candidates can participate in counseling processes conducted by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) for admission to NITs, IIITs, and other participating institutions.
  • The counseling process for admission to IITs and ISM Dhanbad is conducted separately by JoSAA and the respective IITs.
